Trading: Santa's A Horrible Liar

Well, maybe ‘horrible liar’ is a bit too strong for how my trading’s been going over the past few weeks since I last had a really big update about trading. For all of you, who don’t care for Mannconomics, then leave now, because we’re going to get really nerdy in the next couple minutes.

Now that we got all those peasants without hats out of here, let’s get down to business. Remember about a week or two ago when I said I was going to stop trading soon? Ha, haha hahaha.
I was lying.
When I got my new headset, something clicked to all of those people on trading servers around me. Suddenly, they all wanted my items, and no longer wanted theirs. In the last five days, I think I’ve made around 10 keys in value, which is nothing to snuff at, as far as I’m concerned. I’m going to give a breakdown on how the community is reacting in different markets, and some amazing trades that I’ve been through.

Starting out with the ‘Strange’ market, we’re seeing the rise of strange festive items. Exponentially. Turns out just about all of the major items (especially t bat, scattergun and rocket launcher) are going for at least an earbud. I can say, I never saw this coming. The crate 30 items seem to be leveling out in value, right when I buy a Strange Gunslinger, and then go sell it 1:1 for a Strange Machina, of course. In other news, the older stranges (think scattergun, rocket launcher, minigun, grenade launcher, pretty much all stock weapons) are starting to go up. Although the Pyro, Spy, and Engineer weapons haven’t started to go up just yet, I’d say it’s safe to bet that it’s only a matter of time before values start rising.

This week has also seen the impossible for promo items.
They’re dropping.
Right now, Bills are floating around 8-10 keys (some people refuse to lower those prices) and Earbuds are down to 22 keys. This may in fact be the first time in the history of Hat fortress 2 that Earbuds have dropped in price, but it doesn’t really surprise me. Max Heads are down to 2 buds, nobody seems to want the Holiday Headcase, and that’s floating somewhere between buds and max. I haven checked out the HOUWAR’s value in a while (mostly since it makes me cry every time I see how little I amount to one) but it could be that they’re dropping too. I can only hope that Unusuals start to make a comeback. Although I doubt that I’m going to sell my Orbiting Fire Texas Ten-Gallon (it’s even hotter with the brown paint I put on it) I’d like to know that if I ever feel like I need promos, they won’t cost me everything I own.

For anyone who has seen my inventory, it’s filled with around 150 weapons, 20 or so hats, 10 misc. items, metal, and many other random things since I refuse to craft items because I feel that maybe someday, I could sell my stack of 5 Southern Hospitalities. I was surprised yesterday when a guy traded me and said:
 “Show me what you’ve got.”
For normal traders, this may seem not very odd, but I advertise everything in my backpack, telling potential buyers to check my backpack (by using the control prompt “!bp pirate” in the normal trade_plaza servers that I lurk in) so people come and trade me with a recognition of something they want.
This guy wanted everything.
He asked me to put up all my normal items, so I did. I filled 19 and ½ rows with 78 items, some were non-craftable, some were newer (like a phlogstinator and sticky jumper I had) and some items were un-craftable. But I had 78 unique weapons up, no repeats. And then I got that question.
“How much for all of it?”
Seeing hat I normally sell weapons for a scrap each, that puts the value of all the items at 78 scrap, more if you count individual weapons.  78 scrap equals 8.66 refined, but I figured since the rough value was really around  4.33 refined in actual weapon value I could give him a bit of a discount.
“I can sell all this to you for 3 keys, and that’s about a 20% discount off of my normal prices for weapons.”
Turns out the guy didn’t have 3 keys, only two. After a bit of bargaining, we decided that a Strange Liberty Launcher and Ellis Cap were worth roughly a key, and about 30 seconds later, I had completed the largest trade in Team Fortress 2 history.
Although I can’t back up that it was the biggest trade in the world, I certainly feel that if not, I was at least pretty close. This is the first time in roughly 3 months that my backpack’s had less than 175 items in it. I feel kind of empty on the inside. But, profit is profit. I would have ended up crafting some of those items eventually, and selling in bulk is a lot easier than waiting a couple of weeks.

A Triumphant Return From Christmas, Why Viktor sucks, and How I got (Theoretically) Rich

Yes, I know.
I know.
It's been awhile.
A long while.
But all that matter now is that we can finally be that big old happy family again.
Well, until I go onto Spring break. But until then: Its news time!

A bundle of things have happened since I last updated you guys/ girls (guys).
  • Viktor Came out on LoL
  • Christmas
  • I got Earbuds
  • I sold Earbuds for my first unusual (Mirror w/ Green Confetti)
  • Re-sold for a very good price
  • Bought another unusual (Pith Helmet w/ Green Confetti)
  • Sold for buds
  • Sell Buds for Unusual (Big Chief with Orbiting Fire)
  • Sell the Big Chief (Only seconds ago) for 3 Earbuds.
So yeah, I mostly traded for a week. But, hey now I'm part of the 1% of people who are genuinely rich (Hypothetically.) And now I just sold two of those buds for a Vintage Bills. God, I am a sucker for anything with a blue border, I really am. So yes, once again I am sucked into the community of Stout Shako shouting Demopans. But you know what? I've come to accept this. I love everything about Team Fortress 2: the game, the classes, the features, its music, its humor, community content, and of course, hats. So, I will continue trading, no matter how pointless it may be. Goal of getting a V bills and Earbuds: Complete. Let's aim for the big guns of a Hotrod with Sunbeams.

Now, lets get down to the big bit: League of Legends and their new machine man: Viktor. I must say, this update had me on edge. I thought that I was going to be facing something huge, they made him a comic and everything. Instead we got a little man with annoying death beam and a slow/stun. Which as far as I'm concerned is good, Volibear was so overpowered upon his release I had to stop playing the game.  But seeing that this is for once, an underpowered release, I find it to be a nice break from the norm.

During Christmas I got two games: Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 and Dead Rising 2- Off the Record. I don't know if I will do reviews for the or not, since I personally think my reviews are probably fairly boring. So, I'll leave it up to you- the viewers. I'm going to make another poll, and who knows? Maybe more than 2 people will vote this time. Oh well.

TF2: How the Mannconomy Changed our Little Game

So as a frequent reader of this blog may tell you, (which I don't there are any,) that I enjoy hats. I am a connoisseur oh hats. Want to know how to make a game better? Hats. Yes, I can be completely obsessed with hats at times, I know, but I wasn’t truly attached to TF2 until I started trading, and I think it would be a touching story to tell all of you.

So, I when reading the blog when the Mannconomy update was released, I mean really, I had just randomly decided to go to the TF2 blog when it aired. It was pretty cool. I learned about vintages, and I instantly saw my true love.
Nothing makes me happier than a blue border.
But, at this time, I hadn't started playing TF2 hard-core. I still had my horrid little computer, and about a gig's worth of updating to do, but something convinced me: the aspect of an Engineer hat.

So, about a week into the mannconomy update, I decided to put on my gaming pants, and started my 4 hour download into the world of mannconomics. What followed was a shallow goal: Acquire an engineer hat, anyway possible. I had 2 refined, a V. Gentleman's Gatsby, and a W. Noble Amassment of Hats. (For all of you non-traders out there, V stands for vintage, and NV. non-vintage. A vintage item was an item received before the mannconomy update, its simple mannconomics.)

So, I ended up selling my V.  Gatsby for a key, (There was a powerjack in the crate) and I forget what I sold my V. Amassment for, but all I remember is trying to get that metal. For whatever godforsaken reason I thought that crafting my hat was the best idea. So, I sold just about everything I had to get it. So, when I finally got that 4th refined and my Engy token, it really was a big moment for me. I was literally happy with any hat for the Engineer, except like the mining light or the Safe'n'Sound. But, I was excited.

New Hat Created!
You found: Horrific Headsplitter!

That's right-- I made a butcher's knife covered in blood, for all classes. This was my crowning achievement. I was ready to explode into a fit of QQ induced rage. Of all the times to craft a hat. I crafted it during the Halloween update, and for whatever reason, my Engineer token, supposedly guaranteeing a 100% chance of Engy-hat goodness had given me this blood covered piece of multi-class bullshit. Well, I was mad as hell, and wasn't going to take it anymore. Trading had made me lose my hats, it was going ot get me them back.

I started trading full-time for about a 4 month period. I started out by getting rid of this abhorrent thing that had dashed my dreams of hat-filled goodness. I started hitting the trade servers and yelled out my demands, looking for anyone who may be interested. And then, one man trades me saying:
"HAY MAN WHAT U WANT FOR THAT THING?"
"Well, I'm really looking for an Engineer hat"
"HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM... ALL I GOT IS THIS"
He adds a V. Hotrod, I can only try typo hold in my girly squeals of delight.
"This works well with me."
"ALL RIGHT'
Trade Accepted.

SUCCESS! Oh yes, this was the beginning of my 500 hour trading palooza. I didn’t play on my Xbox for a good 2 months at the peak. I had one goal: collect the best hats for all of the classes, not a full set, but my favorite. My other goal: bills and buds. For whatever reason, I was never truly concerned about the unusual market, it was usually out of reach, at my height, I only owned 2 pairs of buds, and I was a stupid child, and sold one pair for a very inexpensive price. But now, I think I could possibly be done with trading. I had 3 different runs on trading, all leading me up to my final backpack, which I’m happy with. I used to own buds, but, well, I sold them for New Vegas. I know it’s a bit on the low side, but the guy wanted them, and I didn’t really look at the value tables. And then the dual misc slot update. There really is no justice.

However, I have to say, I am proud of how far I’ve come with the time I’ve spent. I have a hat for every single class, I have the two rarest vintage miscellaneous items, and I even have a bear. What more could I ask for?  Well, I suppose a free Hat of Undeniable Wealth and Respect would be nice, but I can’t have it all. My dream has come much farther than I ever dreamt, and has taken much longer, too. As a piece of advice for all of you inspiring traders out there I put together a list of things that could very well help you:
·         Don’t trade with your heart. Yes, some hats are cool, but if it’s a good trade, take it, you can get the hat back.
·         Set yourself a goal. If it’s unusual, cool. If it’s something simple like a jackhammer, I think you may be missing the point. But, use it as a tool of motivation, it really helps when you have something like the Whiskered Gentleman dangling around in front of your face for motivation
·         The one thing I have always believed is that vintage WILL go up. And for the most part, it has. Be wary of the newest hats, they’ll fluxgate to a high price, and go down to nothing after a month. Scarcity causes a scare.
·         There are three ranks of values in Trading: Bills, buds, Unusual. I never broke that unusual barrier, but once you break one, you’re in that tire, it’s a big experience.
For all of you gamers, geeks, and random assortment of internet dwellers out there, good night. I have things to do, like watch the IGA’s. If Skyrim doesn’t win, the progress is rigged.
